Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey Wheelchair Accessible Tours
Severe, austere and industrious, the Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey is one of the most deserving examples of Cistercian architecture in Southern France.
Is one of the unmissable destinations of a journey through the landscapes of Provence, in particular the area of Luberon.
A few kilometers from Gordes, it is a must for all tourists visiting Provence.
With its lavender fields, the ancient walls, the surrounding hills, it is the protagonist of postcards and calendars from all over the region.
Still inhabited today by monks and friars, the Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey attracts crowds of tourists.
Especially in July, when the flowering of the lavender field in front of the entrance makes it a very interesting photographic subject.
Founded in 1148 by monks from Mazan Abbey.
The church was consecrated in 1848 followed by other parts of the building still visible today, such as the cloister, the dormitory and the capitolare house.

Touring Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey
Notre-Dame de Senanque Abbey structure has numerous spaces that can be visited by tourists during opening hours.
The Cloister, located outside the church, is the courtyard that connects the various areas of the Abbey.
Through its evocative twelve-arched arcades, decorated with floral motifs, you can also reach the Armarium, which is the place where the manuscripts were kept.
The Calefactorium was the room used in ancient times by the monks for writing manuscripts.
It was also the only room to be equipped with heating.
Capitolare house, also reachable from the Cloister, is used as a meeting place for meetings.
This was the only room in the abbey where monks were allowed to talk to each other.
The election of the regent abbot of the entire structure also took place in the capitolare house.
The church, like all the Cistercians, is rather bare.
The plant is cross-shaped and in Romanesque style.
The light enters timidly from the holes along the perimeter walls and the total absence of frills helps the monks to devote themselves exclusively to prayer without being distracted by any element.
The monks’ Dormitory is actually the first room visible inside the abbey, along the visit route.
Inside the dormitory the beds were made of straw and, on these beds, monks slept in clothes.
Up to thirty monks sat inside this room.
The shop is the final and initial point of the visit.
Here there is also the ticket office and it is a wing perpendicular to the historical structure of the abbey
